Sophia Banks is an award-winning director and producer whose work bridges prestige storytelling and global commercial appeal. Recognized by Baz Luhrmann and Vogue Australia as one of seven female filmmakers to watch, Banks has built a career defined by cinematic ambition, cultural fluency, and an instinct for stories that travel. Originally from Australia, she rose through the elite ranks of commercial filmmaking, directing more than 200 campaigns that amassed over 150 industry awards for world-class brands including Pepsi, Target, Airbnb, Nestlé, Doritos, BMW, Ford, and Range Rover. Her visual language has helped shape modern pop culture, crafting iconic campaigns featuring the Kardashians, Barbie, and Sofía Vergara, and cementing her reputation as a director who delivers scale, style, and emotional precision.
A trusted creative partner to top-tier talent, Banks has collaborated with some of the industry’s most respected cinematographers, including Academy Award nominee Mandy Walker, as well as Larry Sher and Paul Cameron. These collaborations underscore her ability to operate at the highest levels of craft while maintaining a distinct, audience-forward voice.
Banks made a confident leap into features with her directorial debut Blacksite, which received a theatrical release before streaming on Netflix and Sky. The film was praised by Decider as being “driven by a strong lead performance from Michelle Monaghan… with bloody thrills and a mood of quavering distrust in the vein of Safe House,” marking Banks as a filmmaker with a sharp command of tension, pacing, and performance. Her short film Unregistered premiered in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival, further solidifying her reputation for character-driven, high-stakes storytelling. Expanding her creative universe beyond the screen, Banks launched the first issue of the seven-part comic series Killswitch with Thunder Comics at New York Comic Con, showcasing her versatility as a storyteller across mediums.
Banks is a co-founder of Getaway Entertainment, a production company focused on developing elevated, theatrical feature films with global resonance. Her executive producing credits include Cary Fukunaga’s Blood on Snow, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Benedict Cumberbatch; Julian Schnabel’s In the Hand of Dante, starring Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and Gerard Butler, set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2025; and Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada, starring Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, and Jacob Elordi, which premiered at Cannes in 2024. Collectively, these projects reflect Banks’s curatorial eye for bold filmmakers, prestige casts, and culturally relevant narratives.
Banks is in pre-production to direct Tilt, collaborating with Getaway Entertainment co-founders Arwen Elys Dayton, who penned the script, and executive producer Damiano Tucci. She is also attached to direct The Satoshi Claim, a high-stakes drama exploring the origins of Bitcoin, described as The Social Network meets Catch Me If You Can. Written by Mark Goffman, the project is currently in development with production targeting late fall 2026 in the U.K.
